Coal is the single most important fuel for power generation today.Nowadays,most coal is consumed by means of “burning coal in air”and pollutants such as NO x ,SO x ,CO 2,PM2.5etc.are inevitably formed and mixed with excessive amount of inner gases,so the pollutant emission reduction system is complicated and the cost is high.IGCC is promising because coal is gasi?ed before utilization.However,the coal gasi?er mostly operates in gas environments,so special equipments are needed for the puri?cation of the raw gas and CO 2emission reduction.Coal and supercritical water gasi?cation process is another promising way to convert coal ef?ciently and cleanly to H 2and pure CO 2.The gasi?cation process is referred to as “boiling coal in water”and pollutants containing S and N deposit as solid residual and can be discharged from the gasi?er.A novel thermodynamics cycle power generation system was proposed by us in State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering (SKLMFPE)of Xi’an jiaotong University (XJTU),which is based on coal and supercritical water gasi?cation and multi-staged steam turbine reheated by hydrogen combustion.It is characterized by its high coal-electricity ef?ciency,zero net CO 2emission and no pollutants.A series of experimental devices from quartz tube system to a pilot scale have been established to realize the complete gasi?cation of coal in SKLMFPE.It proved the prospects of coal and supercritical water gasi?cation process and the novel thermody-namics cycle power generation system.

1.Introduction

Problems by “burning coal in air”.

Coal plays an important role in the primary energy con-sumption.Coal is the single most important fuel for power generation today and accounts for approximately 40%of the electricity generated worldwide [2].In 2012,the coal demand in the world is 3.8billion toe (ton oil equivalent)within which

2.3billion toe of coal is used for power generation.It is pre-dicted that in 2030coal demand will be 4.6billion toe within which 2.8billion toe will be used for power generation.China will account for 67%of global coal growth in 2030and remain the largest coal consumer,increasing its share of global con-sumption from 48%to 53%[3].
